Culture Lefkada

If you want to delve more into the culture in Lefkada during your holiday, there are also plenty of cultural sights on Lefkada to visit. Most of the cultural sights are located in or close by Lefkas town. When you go to Lefkas town we recommend to take some time for visiting one of the following sights:

The churches

with the unusual architecture (basilicas) under Venetian influence, the Ionian (post-Cretan school) murals and the beautiful wood-carved iconostases (some of which are covered with gold leaf).

The archaeological museum of Lefkas

with a collection of finds from burial mounds (Early and Middle Bronze Age) from Nidri, from cemeteries of the ancient city of Lefkas and from various other places on the island.

The lagoon

The lagoon is one of the most valuable water biotopes in the Ionian Sea protected by the Ramsar Convention as a water biotope of international importance. Here is an age-old fish farm (ivari). It houses a large number of beautiful swans, herons, wild ducks, wild swans and geese.

The Gramophone Museum

The gramophone museum is a small private museum with gramophones, records, rare utensils, jewelry. A creation from a local dedicated collector.

The public library

The library is housed in a neoclassical building (former home of the Zoulinou family). It contains a large number of printed matter (books, etc.) and houses a rich collection of post-Byzantine icons, especially in the Ionic style, such as the Ionic icon painters Doxaras, Patsaras and Roussos.

The fortress of Agia Mavra

This fortress protected the island’s capital from the first decade of the 14th century until 1684 and formed the defense against pirates and other enemies.

The four windmills of Gyra

The four windmills of Gyra are the remained of originally twelve mills. Most mills have Russian names, such as Orlof, Metzikofk, Moskovas, were milling wheat, mainly from Russia, till (at least) the beginning of the 20th century.

The Charamoglios Special Library of Lefkas

with a collection of books and other printed matter written by residents of Lefkas or references to topics directly related to Lefkas. The collection is included in the Guinness Book of Records.

The library of Nikos Svoronos

The library was a gift from N. Svoronos, with books, manuscripts and personal mementos of the inhabitant of Lefkada with international allure.

The Panagia ton Vlachernon church

The church is located in an ash-green forest of old olive trees. Here on Carnival Sunday in 1821, at the suggestion of Ioannis Zambeliou (prominent member of the Filiki Etairia of the island), leaders and notables of Roumeli came together, who (with an oath of the preserved Holy Gospel) confirmed their participation in the National uprising and the direct calling of the uprising in their area.

Faneromeni Monastery

On the beautiful hill that crowns the city of Lefkas, built on the site of the Artemis sanctuary in ancient times, is the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, the island’s protector. The miraculous icon of Faneromeni of the monastery was made by the monk of Athos Veniamin Kondrakis in 1876 on Mount Athos.
